Jimmy Carter and his group at the Carter Center go are known for going around to different countries and watching voting taking place, and seeing if they are legit or if they are rigged. He has said, live on air, that in the Palestinian territories, from the very first election held there to the most recent, they have been some of the fairest of any he has ever seen.
Now if we, a democratic nation, one that believes it is our duty to spread democracy around the world like conquistadores spreading chritianity, do we constantly work to undermine democratic socieities? Keeping with Palestine, HAMAS won the election. We call HAMAS an terrorist organization, which they are, but they are also a political group who has done more for Palestinians of late than Fatah, has decreased curruption, got rid of much crime, provided services which the Palestinian Authority was to have provided but was to busy taking what little money provided for the citizens and spending tidy sums of it on themselves.
Other places where we have said democracy doesn't matter has been places like Iran, we didn't like the elections there so we brough the shah back and look how that turned out. Ultimately democracy doesn't matter to the USA unless it is democracy that agrees to work for us, otherwise we will love to have a dictator, it is easier doing business with one of those instead of somone who needs to keep his people happy.

You are exactly right, the US uses the guise of spreading democracy as a vehicle for its own national interests. The US could care less if it was able to spread democracy, we only care about building a new pipeline or in the case of Gaza, the Israel Lobby in the US has hijacked our foreign policy in the interests of Israel.
