Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this week that she was "deeply concerned" about piracy in the Horn of Africa. This, following a hijaacking of a ship carrying 21 Americans. In my opinion, I agree with the Secretary of State this is a very big problem that the world has to fix. I say the world because the countries in that region do not have the sufficient funds to patrol their waters. There has been hundreds of pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and millions of dollars payed in ransoms, unless they start putting military personnel there it will not stop. It would be a great dissapointment to see piracy and illegal activities like this thrive in a region so ravaged by poverty and oppression.

I also see this issue as major problem not only in the sea but also on how are foreign polices is viewed. Even thus I am a staunch Democrat, I believe in the show of force when needed. I don’t think our military has the capacity to cover all the trade pathways that are in danger, but I do think we can effectively guard each ship with a small force that stays onboard. I believe are policy to not negotiate with pirates should stand and everyone who tries to danger or capture Americans should be brought to justice by force. This issue will obviously take time to work out, but I do see a better solution in the near future.

Growing up on the water and traveling on boats from miami to the bahamas my whole life, i can only tell you stories i have heard. Piracy is a very big problem! While we have the coast gaurd and our patroling system we have cut this back alot, so i agree we should as a whole come up with some way to cut this piracy out completley out.

A solely military solution is just a band-aid. I guess if our plan is simply to win by attrition then it is possible, but, last time I checked there were 10,000,000 people in Somalia. Address the root causes of conflict; poverty, education, disrespect of human rights, and corruption, then, and only then, will the problem be solved.
