Waterboarding: Tough? Yes. Effective? Absolutely

I saw on the news recently that Dennis Blair had been talking about the interrogation (torture) techniques that were used during the Bush administration to obtain information from terrorists. I personally believe that the what some might call 'torture' techniques were used purely in order to keep our country safe. They also worked. We obtained much valuable information from what was done. Some may not have been the nicest techniques, but I'm all in favor of living in a safe country if that is what it takes.

Perceived safety or the fundamental morals our country was founded on is the choice. What do you believe is the extent that the US should have on its "interrogation (torture) techniques"? Have you ever read 1984? If you believe there should be limits, there are a few that the US has already agreed to (wrote actually) ther're listed in the Geneva Convention. Waterboarding is in there, we've actually tried Japanese military personnel for crimes against humanity for the use of waterboarding after WWII. How far are we willing to go?

First of in regards to torture keeping us safe, we are to believe those who have openly spoke falsely, and only reason as of yet not being prosecuted is for political and not legal reason, are supposed to be believed? From what I have been able to discover, actually information gained from these "techniques" has not been made public just the 'Theoretical basis' (though specifics abound), memos behind the legal justification of torture. If you want to feel safe that is great, just don't hurt me to give you a false feeling of security.

Though the techniques are cruel in some people’s eyes; I think you have to be careful to judge the use of torture on people who set out to kill innocent people. The use of torture is the most effective and most of the time only way of getting prisoners (terrorists) to talk. If it has prevented another 9/11 then keep on water boarding those who try to harm America if it has not helped protect the nation then find another form of getting usable info out of terrorists.

I honestly think that their is no debate on this subject, torture is inhumane and all people doing it should be punished. If you are saying that these supposed terrorist are killing innocent people and should not be given the right to a fair trial than what makes these terrorists any different from other serial killers. Should we torture killers to find out about other killers? I see where you might want that to happen but everybody deserves a second chance and what this torturing did to us was just the opposite of stopping terror we made more soldiers by doing this. Imagine the hatred of all those prisoners that were in there where are they going to direct it to? Who are they going to tell?
