Ohio Governor Pledges Free College For Veterans

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is opening his state colleges' doors to veterans, who will be able to attend Ohio universities free starting Aug. 2009, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

Strickland, a Democrat, announced the plan Tuesday, catapulting off Congress' recent passage of a new GI Bill to increase college benefits to veterans and their families.

Strickland said he supports veteran recruiting to potentially increase the number of skilled workers in the state, and believes it is a means to repopulate areas of the state hit by large military deployments, the paper noted.

Finally someone notices that we as veterans' deserve more than just a pat on the back. 80% of this countries homeless population are veterans. It's funny to see that a democrat is making strides in assisting the veterans of America. If this policy was to spread throughout the rest of the states it would be a huge step in the direction of rehabilitating the ones that protect the rights and freedoms of this country.

I believe that what Ted Strickland is allowing in his states is a giant step forward to helping the homeless community especially because 80% of the homeless community are veterans. This new policy also is the least that this country could do to help the men and women who risked their lives in order to preserve our freedoms. Hopefully more states will follow the lead of Ohio and the policy can actually increase the number of skilled workers in the state.

Agree- this is an awesome step to show our appreciation to veterans! In any way we can we need to help those in need, and providing an education could possibly be the best way to influence the lives of Americans. This will hopefully catch on and more and more colleges and states will work together to educate veterans and give them the fundamentals they need.Because while their peers were learning and going into the work force- they were fighting for our freedom. Whether the war be wrong or right to you, education will always prevail and should be given fairly to everyone!

Why suprised that a democrat would do something like this? that seems to be a misplaced comment. The majority of benefits that vetrans have been given have come from democrats not republicans. Republicans talk of national defense and the need to support our troops, but look at what has been done to and for veterans by either party and it will easily be seen who has done more.
In regard to the free education for veterans, I feel that it is a mistake to do. Veterans should get a free education, four years for a four year degree and a stipend providing that they are making a 3.5 that is twice the minimal living income of the locale of where the school is at. They risked thier lives, we can forgo water coolers in the federal offices. The GI Bill is complete trash, the only benefit I can see from it is for the transference of the money they had to put into it towards their childs education.
