Miss California was recently asked if she supported same sex marriage by Perez Hilton at the Miss USA beauty pageant. Hilton is openly gay. She answered the question honestly. She believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. She has since been attacked by liberals in the media including Hilton. Is this woman not entiltled to her own opinion? Why do liberals think that she should have answered the question in a politically correct fashion? Why should she lie about her own beliefs to make everyone else happy?

I think that it’s absolutely ridiculous that she is being slammed for saying her true opinion. Personally I don’t care who wants to get married because it does not personally affect me or my life. On the other hand I completely agree with what she did, at least for once there’s a woman who can be in a beauty pageant and represent America and not be a bimbo and lie. At least she said how she really felt, I’m so sick of hearing these girls talk politically correct so that they aren’t judged... California has my vote!
I agree with you, Miss California is entitled to her own opinion and should not be ridiculed for it. Although, there is nothing against her right for saying what she believes, there also is nothing against the right of liberals to ridicule her. Everyone has the freedom of speech. If you share your opinion you have to be ready to be praised and/or ridiculed for it.

I also agree that she be left alone. It is what she feels to be a truth in heart and mind. There is no reason for her to be under attack. If she can't speak her mind then why should gay marriage be allowed? It is an expression of what gay and lesbians feel that is right to them, but we can not bash what they feel, think, or believe. Double standard if I may say so myself.
I also agree that se should be left alone is mine.

Miss California should not have to lie about her oqn personal beliefs. It is ridiculous to think that she may have lost because of her honesty. Goes to show that these women are being judged not on who they are but rather on who they ought to be ideally.
Isn't everyone who is saying that she has the right to voice her opinion but her critics don't being hypocritical? As a public figure, by choice, she has the right to voice her opinion and people have the right to say that her opinion is wrong (which is them voicing their opinion).
Although it is a bit of a logical fallacy (ad hominem) to attack the arguer, Perez Hilton, instead of the argument, freedom of speech, in this issue, I do agree that Miss California should not have been asked that question. The question coming from Hilton, who is very open with his sexuality, was a deliberate attempt to spark controversy and media attention for himself. Even if Miss California would have responded with an answer supporting gay marriage she would have received criticism from the conservatives claiming she wasn't "American" enough to be Miss USA. In both cases, Hilton would have received press coverage for instigating the argument.

Why not ask her the question, it is just a question. As far as attacking her, would the right-wing conservatives not just a vehemently attacked her and the entire pageant for being for same sex marriage?
Here is an idea, follow the constitution, and the principle of separation of church and state. Marriage is a religious ceremony, let a church marry people. Government cares about the society as a whole, athiests, pagans, Muslims, Hindus, Christains, Jews, Scientologists, and any number of other group with tied to religion or not. Instead remove the word marriage for anyone and just call a marriage certificate (license) a Civil Union. Then everyone will be happy, and preserving the family can be left to families, because if you do your research, the portions of our societies who harp on family values have higher divorce rates, unwed births, teenage pregnancies, abortions, and a whole host of ther problems than need to be dealt with first.

Mr. Quinnell, you have a point about the people responding just voicing their opinions as well. But, with Perez Hilton as a judge in the contest as well as being openly queer and the one who asked the question, you cannot tell me that it did not have an effect on the outcome of the competition. Sure both sides should be able to voice their opinions loud and clear, but when someone's pursuits and goals they have worked for are negatively affected because they voiced what they believe, then that is wrong.

Robbie, that's the point of the question, to judge people based on their responses. People don't have a right to win a contest, so her rights aren't violated. Winning a contest is about pleasing the judges. If she knew Hilton was gay (how could you not), then she should've known how to answer the question if she wanted to win. If she didn't want to do that, she should've known it would've affected her chances of winning.
She has the right to speak her mind if she chooses, just like the judges have the right to vote for some other contestant if they don't like what she says. She has the right to participate, she doesn't have the right to win.
