On thin ice

While everyone's attention is on the elections and the weakening economy, the government quietly started selling licenses to drill for oil in Alaska's Chukchi Sea, north of the Arctic circle. 10 Percent of the earth's polar bears live in this area as well as indigenous peoples, whales and walruses. The Norwegian company that bought 60% of the licenses said that they recognize it
is an ecologically sensitive area and we will work to find the best solution for co-existence.
This is really sad. With all the technology we have, I don't believe we still need to be so dependent on oil and natural gas. It is ironic that we "need" to destroy the whole earth for power and money, when we cannot live without the earth.

That is very sad but there is a lot of money in oil and a lot of people who love money. As long as there is money to be got you can forget about any kind of environment concern!

Its about time the United States starts investing in others known sources to fuel our society, such as solar, electricity and so on. Instead they keep on finding more holes to dig. They need to educate the public on how to be more energy efficient.

Shaw, we need to focus on who the elections so that we can aviod another 4-8 years of devastation. We need to kwon things like who the president have business or economic ties with. The Bush family has big-time Oil Interest; That has had some effect on the country and our approach to certain issues in which we are now involed. The earth is important, so is our economy for that matter so we better get it right with this president.

Focusing on the main post about this topic. The US alone uses nearly 50% of the Earth's natural resources leaving the rest of the other continents the other 50%. I do think that our dependency on oils has grown to an outrageous factor. As gas prices go higher and higher, our dependency gets lower and lower. At one point, there will be a time when automobiles will cease to exist.

Brandon S., it is not a proven fact that our dependcy on oil gets lower and lower. In fact if it were the "oil industeries" would lower the prices of oil to sale more. Just the opposite is true because the demand for oil is so high so to is the price.

i think its crazy tha MMS only "Believe" there is oil and gas there. i also agree that we need to find alternatives to our oil dependancys! We do have the technology...and it is even being done. Our problem is the ties the oil companies have with the government. The oil companies have too much power and somebody needs to force them to find alternatives.

I agree with Brittani Y., some of the top people in our government have to much vested interest in the big oil cow to be objective.
