Michelle Obama not proud of US?

“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country,” she told a Milwaukee crowd today, “because it feels like hope is making a comeback.”

Are you not proud of America for winning the cold war, and the war on communism?
Not proud of America defending and instilling democracy around the world?
That we lead in science and technology research?
Or that we help fund the rebuilding of nations who are hit with dreadful natural disasters?
I can keep going... trust me.

This kinda gets on my nerves a bit. Last night i had a conversation with my brother about a few instances where i felt that people take this wonderful country for granted. Here is a prime example. I also do not like people calling Obama the "savior of America". I, for one happen to love this country and feel it is the greatest country in the world. Though it could use some improvement, the statement that Obama could be the "savior" of the US is absurd. I know that maybe his wife might have misspoken because it happens, but that does not make up for the millions of people who truly take this great nation for granted.

Well for one, I don't know where you get your information from, but we are not number one in science. In fact, we're not doing so well. Other countries own us in that. But by all means, if you have any resources or statistics to back you up, present them, and I will be glad to present mine.

We're not saints, and everyone is intitled to see the good and the terrible of America.

I saw this all over Fox News today at a restaurant. The media is once again trying to exploit a simple misspoken statement. I believe it was innocent, but I respect Andrew's right to jump on board.

Andrew, what are you most proud of about this country?
Is it that we took a stance against “Bin Laden and terrorism?”
Perhaps you didn’t know that we paid him, educated him and trained him, good old USA.
Don’t get me wrong I love my country but I can also see why people don’t feel so proud of it at all times. None the less I actually like your post. I even like Obama but he most certainly is not our country’s Savior. Lindsay, is right when she said “we are not saints ourselves”, my opening statement shows you that. As J., Jones said the news is always trying to

I never said this country was perfect, no where near perfect. I was just stating that people are overlooking all the wonderful things our country does do. Just sick of everyone focusing on all the bad things in this country and forgetting about what makes this the greatest country in the world.

I was mildly offended by mrs obama's remarks. The fact that she can reclaim her pride in country because so many people support her husband seems pretty shallow to say the least. Before joining her husbands campaign Mrs Obama was raking in over $200,000. a year working as a healthcare executive. Doesn't really jive with the whole power to the people, down with the rich up with the poor working class message that the Obama campaign is pushing. Think Obama and his wife are as full of "it" as anybody in Washington. So sad too see everybody so excited about another smooth talking, hypocritical, rich lawyer and his snotty wife. The only thing that Obama is likely to change is the balance of global power...probably not in our favor.

I don't think the point was whether or not we are number 1 but that if your opinion of a America is so low then why are you still here?

I was watching this unfold on the news as well when an elderly man called in to the station and put it perfectly. He said, "When I was being raised on a farm in Indiana I was proud of America, When I fought in the Veitnam War I was proud of America, I'm 70 years old and today I am still proud of America. If you're not, then get out."

Obviously there is so much that goes on today that there will be times when someone is unhappy with the way things are being done but I can't think of a good reason why the wife of a presidential candidate would say that.

Look, I understand where some of this is coming from, but like Lewis Black one said; "After coming back from Italy, I realized something. We're the only country...that I've ever been to, that says almost all the time, "I'm the greatest,"...If I had someone who worked for my company, and came in every day and said, "I'm the greatest sh*t here! And you all would die without me! I can garentee, that you would kill that man, and eat him, just to obtain his greatness." - From Black on Broadway 2004/5

This kinda rings a bell with this post to me. I'm not sure.

Well compared to a lot of other countries we do have more freedoms and stuff like that which I think is some pretty great stuff! I like Lewis Black but like I've said before, I think if his opinion of where he lives is so low maybe he should go back to Italy and stick it out over there!

Wow you go from one extreame to the other Paul. Either love it all or get out right Paul?

lTurner said...

Lindsay, that last coment to K. Paul, show you only have one extreme., now think about it.

Lindsay Register said...

I'm sorry Turner, but are you thinking I'm extreme because I'm athiest from the last post and bringing it here, or is it that you think I'm extreme because I don't think opinions of the U.S. are completely black and white?

I agree that we have our good deeds and our bad ones. After all the government is made up of people and we do make mistakes. I dont agree with her statment bbut it could have also been a mistake. Like you I am proud of our country, and I do reconize the great things we do< but I also reconize the faults.

lTurner said...

Lindsay, I think you are extreme becuase there is only one issue on your mind, or aleast that's all you talk about on your post. Perhaps your plight would be better suited in a different setting. I don't see the world in just black and white, I really wish you actually knew me or my life style.

If I seem that way I'm sorry that you can only see that, Turner, in fact, besides homosexuality, all I've really mentioned before is the freedom of religion, which we should have, and no god, be it yours, or a Muslim god or a Taoist religion should be the head of government, and that's the main issue I've mentioned. But also Turner, all you seem to talk about is god, or right-wing ideas, so what is it that you focus soley on? All I mentioned is America is not black and white, yes, we do have our faults, I wouldn't be surprised if most of america, or even 1/3rd of America wasn't proud of the things we've done, but America is not a 'love it all or get out' type of place, and it shouldn't have to be.

Some times I really wish that I could see the deleted responses. It would probably be some inspired writings I would guess.
>But also Turner, all you seem to talk about is god; it wasn’t always so but he is my strength.
> so what is it that you focus soley on? Manly on God and his freeing and redeeming nature, As-well-as loving those who fall short and need help to keep their eyes head up.
Lindsay, I do however agree with you I don’t think that Religion should be the head of the state. Many people have done a lot of things in the name of religion. There I’ve said it: Its not about “being religious, instead it is being holy and righteous as our God is.”
WELCOME BACK LINDSAY, some times you have to push a person just to make them break out of the shell in which they are trapped in. From what I see in this response your are starting to step outside of your comfort zone, which in any case makes your blogs a lot more robust. You must continue to open your mind, to go were you don’t want to go.

this is a reply to the post:

People are entitled to have and express varying opinions, even those that criticize our government. Disenfranchised minorities sort of have a unique perspective when it comes to suffering inequities, and an understandable hope for something better in the imminent future. That's a fair ambition. To allow the media to convolute people's words and fuel debates over such meaningless garbage is a total waste of time.
I don't know why you're discouraged by what you claim is a lack of pride in America. For every example you listed of America's "good deeds", there are crucial counter-examples, proving that there are good arguments to be made for both sides. Internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII? Pretty bad. Track record with failed attempts at democratization? Not impressive. Even with these and numerous other skeletons lurking in America's closet, most people still have unabashed, unfettered love and faith in and for her (especially drunk college students)

oops I posted prematurely :)

So, Andrew, don't lose hope friend. There are MANY fellow Americans who share your sentiments. Remember to let words be words, and that all of us are allowed to say generally what we please...after all, that's what makes America so sweet. Annnd Fox News isn't the most objective news source, let's be fair.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion J. Smith. If I were to say something like that, would you talk about me and critize my statement?

Lindsay Register said...

I'm actually glad people are able to express how they dislike or like something about America, we're everchanging and evergrowing, and anything that someone finds wrong or right, we should all know, the more we improve our country and make up for any mistakes or let downs of the past the better. If we were to say America is perfect we would have to laugh at ourselves, but that's good!

I must remind you that I was not pointing fingers at the women, i was merely stating that people take this great nation for granted. Thank you all for your replies.

I'm so upset I missed all the fun on this one. I'll try to catch up!!

[Wow you go from one extreame to the other Paul. Either love it all or get out right Paul?]

If someone's opinion of the united states is as low as Lewis Blacks then I would think they would just be miserable here. Why would they want to stay???

The point is we have it pretty damn good here. And it doesn't make sense for anyone like Lewis Black or Mrs. Obama (people with money who are way better off than us) complaining the way they do. And just like I said it before I will say it again. If they have a problem with the U.S. (ya know, the country that made both of them rich), perhaps they should leave.

Sorry my response was late but it is just as good as ever!

Lindsay Register said...

It just goes back to my last post, I do agree, there might be a limit to the complaining, but even those who are rich do not have complete control or abilities to make huge changes in the country, so complaining is just one way to get your ideas out there. If they didn't love the country is some way, they wouldn't be expressing their disaproval over some things.

A lot of people have different opinions about our country. But I for one really love my country, and I am definitely proud to be an American. Sometimes people make mistakes with there words. Hopefully this is what she did.

We do have the luxury of biting the hand that feeds in the U.S. and that's what makes our nation great. It's called freedom of speech. Also we can address the government with a redress of grievances. I know Lewis Black isn't addressing the government face-to-face, but it sure is funny to watch.
