Prison Population in Florida

As of October 2002, there were 74,873 in the Florida prison system. The month before there were 74,768, and the month before that there was 74,249. Jeb Bush stated that crime in Florida is going down since these past 5 years. If you ask me, how can crime be going down if the prison population keeps on going up. Each month the prison population kept on getting higher and higher. We all know that prisons in Florida hold down a lot of inmates that could be on parole or house arrest. This in turn could save us tax payers a lot of money in the long run. With Florida housing the most inmates of all states in the U.S., its only continuing to make a bad name for our state.

Whats your take on this issue?

In my opinion this is a direct coorelation to why Florida is in the budget mess it is right now...there are hundreds of jobs being cut right now and yet we can afford to hold so many prisoners in our prisons...I absolutly agree that we should implement a better parole and house arrest system and get a bunch of those NON VIOLENT, NON DANGEROUS criminals out of the tax payers hands...

I'm in a criminal justice class this semester. We just went over the prison populations.

Even though the prison population have increased, you really need to remember that the regular population has increased also. I rememeber reading once that the Florida average daily population growth is little over 1,000 people per day. So that actually makes Jeb Bush's statement true.

I think we should hand out the death penalty more. Prison population would decrease.

I really don't think that the prison population could make a bad name for our state. Florida has a huge population for one, and another, people from out of state that commit crimes can be sentenced to prison in Florida so I don't think this reflects the kind of people we have living in our state. It would be great if we could impliment a better parole sytem on criminals, but where do criminals go who violate their parole?! Back to jail! Thats the zinger.
