Waste of time?
Seeing the higher gas prices topic brought to mind all of the E-Mails, texts, etc. that I have been getting latley. I know that these have a higher purpose (to try and convince people to not drive or buy gas on a certain day in order to make a statement and hopefully lower gas prices), and yeah, I do send some of them on, but does anyone really think that they are going to get a really large section of the community to participate? I doubt that personally. I mean, I hope that even an extreme minority would participate--it would at least do SOMETHING. I just get the feeling that these things are filling up space in my inbox though...

The only power we have is our purchasing power. Sure, if there were enough people who join together to make an effort to boycott the oil companies, things would probably change, but you're right, Americans are not united so it's not going to happen until something drastic happens.
The media makes sure of that too! You don't see too much news about how people want to boycott Exxon, etc.
But the most important thing a person can do is to try themselves and talk to as many people as possible. If no one listens, then at least you know in all good conscience that you did your best.
I was just trying to get two other co workers to car pool with me. We all work in the same department, we all live within two minutes of each other, yet those two aren't interested. They would rather pay more money, than make a small sacriface, save the environment, reduce rush hour traffic, all so they won't be inconvienced.
I have a good suggestion, since we all need gas, and there is no avoiding it, at least for now, I think people should stop purchasing anything from gas stations, except gas. All the other things, the soda, milk, cigerettes, etc, buy some where else like Publics (privately owned and operated).
Then if people get used to that, it won't solve the problem over night, but I bet you it will make a dent.
Its all about sacrafice. What are we all willing to do for the good of all. Best to you!!!
I have seen these 'dont buy gas on wendesday' emails too, but I have heard that they do nothing to sales as people just fill up the day before or after, so it ends up being a wash anyways.
I don't think it works at all. We can all not by gas on wednesday but then the next day we all rush to the gas station causing them to sell make money. I think the way we can make a dent in there pockets is to stop driving so much. Ride a bike or carpool with a friend to work or school.
