Black on Black Crime

Last nights GOP Debate was a rather interesting one to me. An African America teenager (with father stand next to him) asked Governor Mitt Romney the question what he would do to improve the war right here in America, black on black crime if he was elected president. Governor Romney answered by saying too many black babies are born out of wed lock and that's where it starts. He plans on getting to the root of the problem starting with the parents. Then he topped it off by saying Bill Cosby was right, when he said it was the parents Faults blacks are the way they are. Now I'm going to try to write this as calmly as I can, But I think that is a bunch of crap. He does know what goes on in the black community besides what he See's on T.V. You know it ticks me off because white republicans are quick to talk about how they don't believe in thing for example abortion, when they are the main ones that get them. Please I know I grow up with white girls who's parents were republicans. They just don't tell when things go on in there household. like an unplanned pregnancy they either go and get a abortion or get married before anyone can tell. We don't do it we just take responsibility and grow up. My boyfriend grow up in a single parent home and he turned out great. This is his last year at FSU he is very active. Then there is my family who's Parents are still married after 24yrs and my oldest brother went to jail last year for drug charges. Not because my parents did raise him right because he got grown and started hanging with the wrong crowd. His charges were dropped and now he learned his lesson and he's back on track. I'm not saying all black parent's are good ones, I just don't like that he stood there and basically say indirectly that we should be more like them. As for Bill Cobsy that would take another blog to tell u what I think about him and all his speeches. Lets just say outside of the Cobsy Show I don't care for him.

Not ALL children out of wed lock are involved in crime and not all children born in wed lock are guaranteed to stay out of trouble. What he is simply saying is that the chance are higher for those out of wed lock to get into trouble. I dont like how this is limited to African Americans though, because whites are in the same boat.

As of 1998, of the 39 areas of the United States where race was taken into account of abortions, the abortion rate for black women (36 of 1,000) was 3 times greater than that of white women (12 of 1,000).

Rates aren't 'actual' numbers so not that it doesn't matter but it throws off the truth a bit and also money always has something to do with it.

Last I checked this boy that asked Governor Romney a question was referring to black on black crime and so was this post. Therefore, talking about whites would be invalid unless your comparing them back to the original topic in order to come to some sort of solution.

how are rates not "actual" numbers?

I'm just saying how dare he make it seem like because African American's aren't married all the time when they get pregnant that causes us to grow up and kill each other. Let's ask ourselves where the root of the problem came from. Why are we the way we are. Let me just say Willie Lynch's making of a slave.....look it up

I don't think there's much actual evidence to support this claim.

When you include statistics, you should link to the source so that we can look at them. These numbers seem very suspect. Either way, when you control for poverty (black women are more likely to be in poverty), you'll find there aren't any differences based on race, the differences actually are based on income/wealth.

>Rates aren't 'actual' numbers so not that it doesn't matter but it throws off the truth a bit

Actually, not only are rates actual numbers they are the only numbers that help you discover the reality of a situation. If you have a population of a million people and five of them have abortions and you have a second population of ten people and four of them get abortions, and you look at the absolute numbers, you'd think the first group had more abortions. They technically did, but only because they had many more people. The second group actually was the group where abortion was more of an issue because 40% of the group got abortions. In the first group, less than 1% did. When you use rates, you eliminate this kind of bias.

Overall, this issue (crime) has nothing to do with marriage. It has to do with poverty. People who are poor are more likely to commit crimes. They also more likely to be unwed. Romney committed the confusion of correlation and causation fallacy.

I don't have a Nole88 in my gradebook, so I can't give you any credit for posting under that name.

Who you become has a lot to do with your upbringing and what kind of people were around to influence you. You have to look past black/white and other labels though because ultimately, it doesn't matter. There comes a point in every sane persons life where he/she is completely in control of his actions and what he makes of his life regardless of outside influences.

Sorry I meant to include the source with my post but I forgot.

I agree that this is more of a poverty issue than a race issue, however, I included those statistics to point out the falsity of adbowlaand's quote.

I believe that black on black crime is not the only crime in this century. I mean how is he going to say that too many black babies are born out of wed lock, yet last I checked there are still more white people in America. Whether people are white or black, we still see both races going to the welfare line, we still see both races going to jail, we still see both races going to college, and we still see both races in every career field in America. So Mitt Romney needs to sit down somewhere and think about what he said. I mean why blame a child's actions on their parents? I am not a parent, however I do have two parents who have been married for 22 years. I also have two brothers, an older one and a younger one. My older brother chooses to do nothing with his life, except work when he NEEDS money. I, on the other hand, work a full time job and go to college full time. We were raised by the same two parents the same way. It is not the parents' fault and I am tired of hearing that. Every human in this world makes their own decisions!

most babies are not born out of wedlock. It is a lot of black on black crime because instead of having a safe place for kids to play they walk the streets and join gangs
