Portland elects an openly gay mayor!

On May 20th, Portland, Oregon, elected Sam Adams as its mayor. He won by an astounding 58% of the vote, against 12 competitors. While his campaign did not focus on the fact that he is gay, I feel it is a wonderful victory for the gay and lesbian community and the equality that we are always searching for.

In a quote from this article:
"I'm running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor," Adams said after delivering his victory speech. "But I'm very cognizant, very aware that I'm the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That's a real honor."

That is good to see that not everyone is as closed-minded as I thought. Hopefully he will be a great mayor and show by example that being gay isn't as sadistic as many people may view it. Lets hope this is a step forward to something better.

I think people should vote toward the heart not the background. If he will be a good mayor then go for it.

I think it is awesome that Portland elected a gay man for their mayor. I also think the guy has a tough job in front of him, though. There are going to be a lot of people watching his every move hoping he messes up in a big way. I do hope, though, that if he does a good job that other people around the country will see that there is no reason to be hostile toward homosexuals.

I agree with you Amanda.I think this victory is great for the gay community as well as Portland. Alot of times people don't like change, but alot times change is for the best.I think he would be a great mayor,I wish him the best.
