Rapper Vs. Politician
Ok, Politician Scooter Libby was found guilty for lying under oath and sentnced to 30 months. Rapper little Kim was found guilty on the same charge, lying underoath and sentenced to a year and a day. The only difference between the two is that she served her whole sentence and his sentence has been commuted. The main factor in both of these cases is that he knows the president and she does not. The thought of having her sentence commuted was never an option. Why? Because she doesnt go hunting with President Bush. The point is they did the same crime. One served the time one did not!

That was a good connection. I would have never put the two together. It is very true, which is strange because usually anyone who is well known or rich will get off without jail time.
In my opinion race can play a big toll in this type of situation. The sad thing is that we have so many African Amercians locked up in jail and it continues to increase. Being an African American myself, I would just like to say that I really want the black community to do better. just because you favor someone does not mean that they should be taken off the hook for doing something illegal whether they are black or white. We have bunches and bunches of African Americans serving their time for the American Judicial System and Scooter Libby, should be serving his time too. It doesn't matter what race he may be.
Put the race card back in the deck. It doen't belong. People who commit crimes pay the price. Libby's sentence was communted not pardoned. He did the President a favor at some point and is now being repaid. But he didn't get off scott free and has already paid the fine. Therefore, I am moving on to better news.
The race card yeah maybe you should put it back in the deck, however, money ad knowing the right people cards are being played in this situation. If anybody commits a crime they should do the crime. No matter who they are, who they know, and how much money they have. But in the society we live in today, its not going to happen, if you know the right person, or have enough money to pay off the right person, you will be ok.
Keep in mind that the "race card" is appropriate in some circumstances, like those wherein racism is a factor.
And race is certainly a factor in a situation like this. Why? Because the only people who can have their sentence commuted are people who have some connection to a president or governor. In the history of America, we've had no black presidents and only two black governors total out of all 50 states. This is one of those situations that, while there is no direct racism necessarily involved, the effects have a disproportionate effect on one racial group over another. That's not to say that a white person wouldn't commute a sentence for a black person, but it is less likely and I'd wager that if you examined commutations and pardons historically, most of them went to white people. Probably white males.
>People who commit crimes pay the price.
Not always and it certainly appears that Libby won't pay the price (whether he deserves to or not is a separate question).
>Libby's sentence was communted not pardoned.
Yes, but almost every analyst has said they believe Bush will pardon Libby, he'll just wait until late 2008 to do it because it will be politically more acceptable then.
>But he didn't get off scott free and has already paid the fine.
Not "scot free," but he is wealthy and the amount of the fine was no problem for him and by being loyal to the president, he'll be repaid in the future financially.
I did not pull the race card TERESA. You just like being argumentive. Read the blod again.
Yep, sure I sure do like being arquementative. And I stand behind what I said. Little Kim got one year and one day. That is only 366 days. Libby got 30 months=2.5 years plus an fine. Who got the worst sentence? Yes, Libby had his sentence communted. So what? I bet Little Kim wouldn't comlain if Little Kim knew the President and the President commuted or pardoned Little Kim's sentence. It is a fact the President pardons people all the time. If he desides to do something about a situation the friend is in than hey bully for that friend. Bet you wish you had a friend in high places when things got tough.
Keep in mind that Libby wasn't just convicted of lying under oath, he was also convicted of obstructing justice, a much worse crime than Lil' Kim's. And he was convicted of obstruction of justice in a case dealing with national security and possible treason. And he basically gets no punishment for that.
Race is certainly a legitimate question in this case, because when do minorities have friends in such high positions who can do them such favors?
If you had said the elite over people who earned their money, I might agree. But not in this instance. Race is not always the case. If you had said the same judge had heard both of them I might agree then, but it didn't. If you had said it happened in the same state, again I might have agreed. But again it didn't and therefore I don't.
I guess Ms. Rice, General Powell, and any of the others that you named in class are just not high enough for such favors? Even though they can ask the President on someone else's behalf for just such a favor.
>If you had said the elite over people who earned their money, I might agree. But not in this instance. Race is not always the case. I'm not even sure what this paragraph is trying to say, it's a bit vague with too many pronouns.
General Powell no longer works for Bush and would have no influence with the administration at this point.
Rice could probably have such influence, but does she use it?
Besides, two (or three or four examples) don't prove that black people have the same level of access here. This is the observational selection fallacy, since those (and the few I mentioned above) are the only examples throughout our entire history. They are the exception, not the rule.
