The Army's Shortcomings

I was reading the news and came across a headline that dealt with recruiting numbers for the army. The article explained that the Army missed their recruiting goal for the second straight month. Exact numbers haven't been released but one defense official said that the Army missed their goal by about 15% in what is normally their busiest month. The article also said that decline in parental support, especially in the war may be a big factor. Now I don't know about other families, but I grew up in a military family and we were taught that no matter what your feelings on the issue at hand when your country calls for your help you do it no questions asked. Sure, I agree that our troops need to be pulled from Iraq sooner rather than later, but I also think that until that time comes Americans need to support our military regardless of their current feelings for President Bush, he's not the one dying for our country our troops are.

In my opinion, we also have the right to choose to be in the military. If the draft were to come back which I definately don't hope to happen, then men and women would have no choice but to fight and serve our country. I guess the war has gotten parents and their children in the idea of if you go to Iraq, it is going to equal setting yourself up for an early funeral, and that is my opinion on why the recruiting percentage has declined during their busiest month.

I agree that we as Americans should want to help our country if its in need. However, I also understand why people aren't running to the nearest recruiting site. No one wants to leave their loved ones and put themselves in certain danger. No one wants to go to war, and no one wants to face death at the age of 20. So I believe these recruiting numbers are going to continue to fall.

Also, its not a crime not to want to go to war...thats the beauty of America. We have choices and the ability to decide for ourselves what is the right decision.
