Republicains Are "BIG SPENDERS"

Many people in this class may not remember the last time we had a huge deficit but I can. Our dear President Ronald Reagan: Lead us to another huge deficit. Can you guess his party affiliation? If you guessed Republican you are correct! When it think of most republicans I think of "Elitist with Money". Because of this I could never be considered a republican, I am elite if even if in my own mind, but I don't have enough money to fit the true profile. It is my belief that people who were born with a silver spoon once in office they spend like it. Know matter how big the deficit gets they know that their children want have to pay for it because they are rich. If America must trim the budget and they must take it from programs to help the "Average American" who do you think it hurts? If you guessed the rich you couldn't be further from the truth. As America builds this great deficit it is going to hurt the Average American, Poor Americans, Young Students, College Students, the Men and Women who are fighting for this country right know and many other less fortunate people. In bold contrast "President Bill Clinton" while in office brought the deficit down to one of the, if not the lowest point in history. Can you guess his parties affiliation? If you guessed Democratic then you are Correct! You only need to decide what's best for You, your education, your future, your family and maybe even your children that's if you can afford to have any at this current deficit.

I understand where you're coming from with this. When I think of the republican party I think of the phrase, "the rich get rich, and the poor get poorer," which only reminds me of places like Mexico. It's a terrible steriotype, but I haven't really seen anything to cast that phrase out of my mind. Yes, if you work hard for your money, then you deserve it, sure. But what about a woman with four kids, a mortgage and works at KFC? If this woman works hard enough, even with the mistakes she made, she'll probably always work at the fast food resturant. It's not something I'm just assuming, I've asked afew of these people out of curiosity. Sometimes in life people just need a break, or a push. What about these people who play basketball for a living? A man who runs around shooting hoops makes more money then the president of the United States, all the while people are digging in the trash for a peach pit, and others are working double shifts to help pay for their oldest childs college and their own bills. Something is just uncomfortable about the entire situation.

i know where youre coming from. Repulicans are usually the richer ones, who are always looking for a way out. Most really don't care about the democrats, besides they are mostly looked at as the poorer population(which is not true). Only if we could all be equal at the polls.

I agree with you on that about the Republicans. They are the richer ones, and they only look out for themselves. The Democrats on the other hand are the ones that, look out for everyone, and not just themselves. The Republicans to me, spend everyone else's money, and save their money for what you call "Rainy Days."

Sure the Democratic party has some ideas about helping less fortunate citizens, but when I look at words like socialism and communism, it just doesn't seem right to me. I am far from rich right now. That's why I'm here in school. In the future, I may have an excess of money and I wouldn't necessarily want to have what I had worked for taken away and distrubited as someone else saw fit. I am registered Democrat right now only because I knew that King George was a Republican and we needed a change. Now that I know what each party's ideals are, I am thinking Democrats might not be thinking properly. Maybe if there was a Republican that was more for social change this country could be better.

>Sure the Democratic party has some ideas about helping less fortunate citizens, but when I look at words like socialism and communism, it just doesn't seem right to me.

dictionary.com:

Communism: "a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state."

Socialism: "a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole."

There is one member of Congress who advocates anything even remotely related to socialism or communism. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is not a Democrat and is, instead, a registered member of the Socialist Party.

Notice that neither definition says anything even remotely related to the redistribution of wealth.

>In the future, I may have an excess of money and I wouldn't necessarily want to have what I had worked for taken away and distrubited as someone else saw fit.

But this isn't what happens.

1. It's wrong to assume that most wealthy people "worked" for their wealth. If you look at the list of the richest people in America, you'll find that only a few names at the top of the list worked at all. Most of them inherited the money.

2. People get way more money back from the government than they pay in taxes, even the wealthy. Imagine what it would cost to build the road you drive to and from work if you were to pay for it by yourself. The sum total of 100% of all taxes you pay in your life wouldn't be enough to pay for it all.

3. Rich people use more of the government's resources than the poor do. In the category of "welfare" spending alone, 85% of the money spent in this area goes to the middle and upper classes. 15% goes to the poor. The billions of dollars of corporate subsidies the government spends goes to rich people. Even the roads mentioned above are used much more frequently by the rich. One, rich people have more ability to travel, go on vacation, drive, etc. They own more cars and they use public transportation less. Beyond that, almost every rich person either owns a company or owns stock in various companies. The profits they make from those companies rely heavily on those roads (and many other things) to deliver products to and from stores and to and from customers. All of those roads (and many other things) are paid for with taxpayer funds. This is true in many other areas as well. I could go on and on, but the point is that the reason that the rich pay higher taxes is that they use more of the resources those taxes create.

4. Things aren't redistributed as "someone else" sees fit, they are redistributed according to how the government officials elected by th people see fit. That's how representative democracy works.

These things are not the things that socialist and communist countries do, these are the things that democracies do. All of them. And we do most of this stuff less than most of our fellow countries do it.

Well, that makes sense. I saw in the lecture notes that Revolutionary Communism and Democratic Socialism were left- wing ideologies. I see that these are not actually Democratic ideals now. Thanks for the clarification.
