Poor choice of words

Lately it seems that majority of political candidates are being criticized for making speeches using "poor choice of words." For example with democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama and his comment about small town voters has given his opposition Hillary Clinton a new way to attack him. What I don't understand is why don't political candidates chose their words wisely from the beginning so they don't end up apologizing for something that was considered "poor choice of words."

I think it's good that the candidates are speaking from the head. I know they memorize most of their speeches but the should freestyle their speech more. If you say something wrong then let it go from there. At least it's the way they really feel.
