Obama's Arrival

So in just five short days, Barack Obama will be inaugurated as the next president of the United States. Although I was unfortunately unable to make it out to vote for him in the election, I sat watching my television the night of November 4th as he gave his acceptance speech with a feeling that I can't even convey in words. It makes me extremely proud to see how far our country has come, and even prouder to be an American. I can't wait until Tuesday to watch yet another monumental, important moment in American history go down in the books.

The nation has come a long way since only white men with land where allowed to vote. I belive we are entering a new era in which change is the factor in our nation. We have listed our spirit and have put our confidence in one man in which the people have elected president. If you think that November 4th was monumental wait until Jan. 20th, in which more than 2million people are suspected to be at Washington Mall.

While I too am encouraged by the strides that our country has made since her conception, I am just as discouraged by SOME of the changes and directions that I see Obama taking us in. I think that we as a nation have gotten so wrapped up in the "change" that Obama promises that we have put on blinders to the implications of some of these changes. Are we really ready?

I agree the nation has come a long way. Until now the only presidential figures we had in this country were white men. When kids are little a popular dream is to become president. But sadly this dream could only come true for a small part of the children in the country. At what age did young children of minorities realize that in reality their dream of becoming president can not come true because we live in a nation so blinded by color. I'm glad to say that this dream crushing reality is only a figment of history now. Starting with this generation the idea of a president of minority decent is now a reality not just a dream.

I also feel that it is really great that the U.S has come so far in such a short time. When my parents were kids schools were still segregated as well as restaurants and other places now considered public. Just because Obama is black however does not mean that he is the right person to run this country. As strongly as I feel that race should have no part in an election, it was really a shame to see so many people that were blinded by the color of his skin, and over the next four years will see this country continue to decline.
