Citizens over the age of 55 should be happy because effective 2009 they will receive a 5.8 percent increase in their social security. This increased payment will benefit more than 7 million Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries on December 31. This is the largest increase since 1982. I think that this is a wonderful package for seniors to receive because they do deserve it. But what about the non-senior citizens whose cost of living continues to rise, but income remains the same? This year majority of Florida employees did not receive a raise. How are we supposed to maintain a standard of living when fuel and food prices are going up, but we are making the same income we did last year?

Even though I am happy for these recipents,I can't help but wonder what it will cost in the long run? Will I, My children, my children-children ever be debt-free. How many more tax increases will there be? How many more will collapse under the strain.

I also agree that the increase is helpful to our senior citizens. We need to appreciate and take care of our older population. However their are many needs in our community that our tax dollars could benefit. Health care benefits would help the senior citizens and all members of society. I know that my retirement will not depend on Social Security. I fully intend to provide for myself and not leave it up to the government to support me. My view is that a 5.8 increase in taxes should be used in a way that would benefit all of society.
