Troops succeed in Iraq
Here is an article that I find very interesting. It just goes to show that with time our soldiers can succeed in Iraq. They can work directly with the Iraqis and help get their country back up and running. I'm not saying it's going to happen over night, but it is not a lost cause by any means. This is very encouraging. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article2358061.ece

To bad stories such as these do not fill repetitive hours of airtime on the major news networks. I wonder if similar things are going on else-where...? Good find!
>Is our dependence on oil that great?
Yes, almost every aspect of our economy is connected to oil. Obviously most of our transportation (cars, trucks, semis, boats, airplanes) use oil in one form or another. Additionally, much of our electricity comes from plants that use oil in the production of the energy that turns on our lights. Finally there are many other products that have petroleum in them besides just oil and gas.
>And if so let's change that.
Obviously, not everybody wants to. The oil companies don't want this to change. They are some of the most profitable companies in the history of the planet. That means they not only are willing to fight to keep their power, they have a lot of money to fight with. And politics is all about money.
>By the time I am ready to retire Social Security will be zippo.
Not true. Current projections say that if nothing else is done right now, in 2043, social security benefits will drop to 75% not 0%. But social security is referred to as the third rail of American politics. The chances that politicians will do nothing to fix that potential shortfall is about 0%. If they didn't fix it, you can bet that they would be booted from office. Why? Senior citizens vote in the highest percentages of any group in society and they have the most money to contribute to politicians. Again, everything in politics is about money.
2043 i'd only be 53. I probably would give it a few more years till I retire. I also can't wait till my generation is at the driver's seat, I wonder how we'll do?
So how come the media makes it sound like if you don't support the war then you don't support the troops? I don't support the war I'll tell you that right now but my uncle, cousin, and sister in-law are all in the war at the moment. I totally support the troops and their return.
Iraq is making strides and it is a geat thing, the sad part is that Americans don't get to see that progress. I think one day people will see how important the war was and realize that George W. Bush did the right thing.
>it is a geat thing
This is a "does not follow" fallacy. While it is true that one day, this might develop into a great thing, nobody with any knowledge of the situation in Iraq would say it is "great" right now. President Bush doesn't say that. General Petraeus specifically testified otherwise, that's why he called for the troops to stay in Iraq longer.
