Marijuana laws are something that needs some serious reconsidering by our wonderful law makers.
First of all, you have to remember that if marijuana were legal, not everyone would use it. Only a sector of society would use it, and not all of them would be frequent users. So the thinking that America would go down the tubes because everyone would be baked and have no work ethic or motivation is far from the truth.
Furthermore, the potential revenue from not only the harvesting of the buds to smoke, but the products that can be made from byproducts of the plant (i.e. hemp) can help us have a more “green” society (no pun intended) by outdating other products that are more expensive to mass produce. Also, assuming that it would be taxed in a similar way to alcohol and tobacco, the money that would come from a simple law change is mind blowing. Not to mention the thousands of jobs that would be created, which would help our economy out in these down times we seem to have encountered.
In 2005, more than 21,000 Americans died from alcohol overdose excluding motor vehicle accidents, whereas there have been no documented deaths from a marijuana overdose ever. A lethal dose of marijuana would be at a ratio of 1:40000. That means you would need to smoke 40000 times the amount of marijuana that it would take to get you high. The lethal ratio for alcohol is between 1:4 and 1:10.
Last, since 1965 more than 12 million Americans have been arrest on marijuana charges. This causes these people not only to have to pay a lot of court fees and whatnot, but also gives them a criminal record which haunts you for the rest of your life. This has the potential to ruin your life, not allowing you to get more than a menial job, which eliminates the potential to be a financially successful person and for many people would lead to misery and depression.
Basically, I believe that the marijuana laws in effect now are ridiculous and need to be done with. There are no valid reasons for making it illegal. Alcohol was illegal in the 20’s, and it changed so maybe there is some hope on the horizon.

I totally agree that we ahould legalize the drug marianna. Another reason why I agree, which is a reason that you did not mention, is that legalizing the drug will help keep the rising cost of the incarceration of many individuals. If no one has to go to jail because it is legal, then all the extra money can go towards something else. Isn't that what we want, more money?

A reason why I agree, which is a reason that you did not mention, is that legalizing the drug will keep the rising costs of the incarceration of many individuals down. If that cost goes down, then we could use that money to go towards more important issues, such as the education system.

I do fully stand for the legalizing of marijuana becuase not only would the government be able to make money; crime would also go down as well. Think of all of the arrests made becuase of this harmless plant. It is sad that our government trys to make it sound like it is such a bad thing. You cannot overdose on marijuana and you can easily die if you drink to much alcohol.
All of the laws banning the use and possession of this NATURALLY OCCURING PLANT are ridiculous and just cause unnecessary problems for many good people. I think people forget that marijuana is not made in a lab like cocaine or cooked in a kitchen like crack rocks, it sprouts from mother earth and commonly grows to a height of over 7 feet. Keep in mind that I can go to the gas station and buy cigarettes that put tar in my lungs, are extremely addictive because of the chemicals added by the tobacco companies and cause widespread cancer, but I will get arrested for smoking some bud that is not addictive, has been proven to combat eating disorders and nausea, and recent studies have shown that marijuana may prove helpful in treating breast cancer.

We have all been through the same conditioning about drugs ever sinse we were in grade school. We have all heard what can happen if you use marijuanna. Yes, there are consequences. Just as there are consequences when you choose to drive your car, or get married, or have kids, or make a simple decision like "taking the red or blue pill". But the point is that people should be able to make their own choices. Someone very close to me used to be a weed fiend. He later experienced the "gateway" and became addicted to cocaine. Some might say that smoking marijuanna ultimately led him to that dangerous and destructive habit. The fact is instead of trying to confiscate all the marijuanna, the government should be spending more on drug and alcohol education. Make it legal! Then make the public aware of the consequences!

I believe the laws are ridiculous. My friend is on probation for a year and has the possibility of going to jail for a little piece of weed on a stem. The court system is paying to incriminate someone who has barely done anything wrong. They are spending money to prosecute someone who possessed nothing harmful just as though they would to someone who actually did something wrong. Is there a reason for wasting money on something so innocent and harmless? I really don't get it.
