Amendment 8

"Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution to require that the Legislature authorize counties to levy a local option sales tax to supplement community college funding; requiring voter approval to levy the tax; providing that approved taxes will sunset after 5 years and may be reauthorized by the voters."

Being a poor college student I'm all for this and have no idea why something like this hasn't been put in place already. With the rising cost of college something needs to be done!!

I agree, that would be great being a fellow poor college student. I'm wondering if this would affect anyone though? I can tell who this amendment would benefit if it was passed, but I want to consider both sides as well. Can anyone help me in understanding both sides to this?

Some people don't want to pay taxes for programs like these. Older people who have already put their kids through college or people who don't have children. Which I think is dumb because EVERYONE should want more people to go to college. The more educated the people are, the better society is for everyone!

I believe this amendment should be passed. It would make education much more affordable and it would fill the void that property tax reductions have left in educational budgets. So, vote yes on 8!

Sooo this one didn't pass. Looks like people rather have an uneducated society rather than give up a few more dollars!

It is pretty sad that people can't see the bigger picture. They wouldn't even have noticed the tax. I guess any bill that says has the phrase "levy a tax" is not going to be popular.

Being a college student, I thought this sounded good also. Before the election, I spoke with others, including adults, about the amendments. Some adults feel they are already paying a school tax, and they feel once you graduate high school, it is your responsibility to pay your own bills.

I can see both sides of the argument. As a college student I am aware of what it is like to not have the funds. I can also see that tax payers would say, you are an adult like the rest of us, get a job! Personally I am sad to see that it didn’t pass.

As a college student I was upset to see that this Amendment didnt pass. This would have helped so many struggling students help focus on studies so that intern our future job force would be stronger. Once again people did not however see beyond the box and only saw that they would be paying another tax and not on how much good it would do in the future.
