Lewis Black is a political topic comedian who has performed on stage since 1990. In one of his latest films, Red, White, and Screwed (2006 HBO Special), Lewis Black discusses his views on our government and why the president carries gay rights on such a high pedestal. Unlike George Carlin from my previous post, I agree with Lewis Black's speculation nearly 100%. It's pretty interesting how Black can make the somewhat touchy subject accurate and humorous simultaneously. I too, do not understand why many people in government are absorbed in gay rights/marriages when we have more pressing issues to worry about; welfare, health care, the war in Iraq, and so on. I thought Christian beliefs were not to interfere with government actions, am I wrong?

Seems to me that the issue should be settled so that we could move on. Did you see the Lewis Black clip that says "Bush said he reads the bible every night. Finish the f##***#* book."?
Yea, and in the same movie Red, White, and Screwed Lewis Black says, "Our president said when it comes to evolution, the jury is still out." ... It makes me laugh knowing Bush believes the world was created in 7 days.
This guy is not funny not in the least. Secondly who is he to think his political veiws are correct? Is it becuase he spreads his opinions when he tells a joke. Why is it that the clip reads "Adult Language", I didn't know using profanaty was adult like? It seems as if it should say Warning " Idot Language."
I'm guessing that from your comment you agree that having to write in the constitution something that we as intelligent people should already know is just the thing we need right now with every other more important problem Turner? The clip reads that, because our teacher required it. But for you to get angry over this clip - by which millions of Americans watch Lewis Black and agree with him, Christians and others alike - is surprising. We're in American government class to learn and understand other people's views and ideologies without letting our personal feelings get in the way, Turner. Lewis Black expresses his opinions on government issues, which we who live in a democracy have the right to enjoy. If you have a problem with the clip being labled as, "Adult Context" for our teacher's sake, then I suggest you please take it up with him and leave your personal emotions out of this please.
Ms.Register, I'm not upset or angry with whom ever wrote this clip or posted it. Mr. Blacks opinion, comedy and his language stinks that's all. Secondly your right everyone has an opinion and should feel free to vocie it. Thirdly I diffently don't take this or any blogg personally, it is actually very educational to be able to interact with your classmates in real time. Finally I have enjoyed reading many of your responses keep up the good work and remember "question every thing"!
Lindsay, I think lTurner's comment wasn't as much about you posting this as it was about how he doesn't care for Black. His comments weren't directed at you, they were directed at Black.
Of course, most of the argument, Lamar, is ad hominem. Referring to his language as "idiot language" doesn't prove him right or wrong, you are simply attacking the arguer and not the argument.
I love Lewis Black and am glad you were able to post this. I agree. I think that with all the issues going on in America, that gay rights/marriage (not that they aren't important)is something that we are really "threatened" by!
i meant are NOT threatened by. ha sorry.
While Lewis Black's arguements are ad hominem, I agree with him. I just cannot wrap my mind around the idea that the gay community and homosexuality is a threat to the American family. I mean...how? Why? The only answer I hear are those from Christian's who have a case of homophobia, or well, republicans. My mother and her girlfriend have been together for a long time, and they have not 'threatend' anyone in any way. However, all my life, she has taught me to be open minded to other people's cultures, religions, and beliefs. Do they not teach that in bible study anymore?
This country is becomming more and more skewed on the constitution in my opinion, and I'll tell you why. Not only gay marriage, which I know is left up to individual states, but all of our laws are looked over by the supreme court, which is largely a christian community. The government needs to stay out of ALL religious based laws including but not limited to:
gay marriage, abortion, drug use, our pledge of allegiance, and many many others. I personally was supended in high school for refusing to stand during the pledge because I don't believe in any god. (the suspension was repealed, by the way, as I threatened a lawsuit.) I will address the subject of schools and rights in my next post.
For once, someone I can relate to. My school tried to suspend be for, "witchcraft and spreading the evil," because I prefered to wear black clothes, and was interested in the study of all religions not just Christianity. I was never suspended for it, but on many occassions did I feel the effects of their dislike. I would prefer either one of the following; no religion in schools, or a school in which Christmas can be celebrated hand in hand with say, Muslim and Jewish holidays. Either all or none, playing favorites is not how it can be done anymore. America is full of other religions and cultures via immegration. Just like many, many people of America speak more then one language, we have become a melting pot of many countries. With that being said, there is more for the government to think about rather than, "good Christian ideologies."
Lindsay, we America, is in fact a melting pot but we have culture to "American Culture." We can movie to other countries but the culture of that country is unqiue to that country. It is also my belief that because we as a country are so watered down, passive, lukewarm, tolerent and confused in our religous beliefs and convictions, that it has lead to a moral value let down. Many people lives are destroyed by this calspe of our moral values. With respect and sensitivty, parents that have abandonded traditional rolls, were in most cases thaught traditional rolls from their parents. This younger generation for the most part don't have that positive moral support as a result they have No foundation. If we keep on this present course of "do what ever feels good to you" type of mentality we are doomed. JD many people have died for you and me to even have the right to stand up for that flag. My personal allegiance is to My God, my family my country if that's what portect my family. We must be warned against the many alternatives out in the world today. Beging opened minded is good but not if your mind is open on both ends. Meaning that we must take in things but we must be very careful to keep only what is good and throw out the bad.
Turner, if you were to, uh, "movie" to say, China, you would bring your own culture with you, correct? How would you feel if they told you you had to pledge to their beliefs and it would be agaisnt the law to sit because their beliefs are not your own?
As I have asked you before, in another one of my posts, what moral fibers are so delicate now? If you look back to say, 1940s, we had racial segrigation, a lack in women's rights, and the 'traditional' ideas of women staying at home like good little wives and to teach their children not to talk to "those strange black people across the street" and god forbid if you were a homosexual. If you think that we've become 'watered down' then that is your belief, and you are welcome to it. I believe we've grown higher intelligence and a better capability to think for ourselves.
Lindsey responding to your interest in all religions; i know how you feel. I was extremely religious for about 10 years of my life and studied everything from Christianity, Judism, Catholism, and the beliefs of the ancient dead sea scrolls. Religion consumed my life for a while. I believe now that it is not so much whos religion is right or wrong, but, diving within yourself and asking what your personal beliefs are. You may get "ideas" from religion but, none of them are solid answers. I will also say that because America lets us choose what religion we want to follow, then they should focus on the matters that are not controlled by them. They should focus on preserving our free way of life, and the security of it. Never trying to push for one unified religion, it wont happen. That is an issue that they can not contol.
Yes Lindsay it is true that in the old day of our country many horriable things happened in the "name of Religion", that to is the problem with America. See if you can follow me now as I take you deeper. It is proven that just being religous is a flop, what I'm speaking of is " Being Godly and Rightous, Holy." That is a forien concept to the Mass Majority as it is proven by history itself. Danielle, please don't be discouraged many people study religon just like studying for this class. By doing so the meaning and the hearts true impact is most often missed or just plain left-out. So to you both I say that is you what tangiable evidence that striving for those few truths will change you life forever, you only need to let me walk you through my life. The Then and The Now.
I would rather we stick to American government issues and leave uh, whatever else you're talking about out of the way. I don't know you, Mr. Turner, I would rather not know you. The point of the matter is this is a country that is no longer based soley on one religion, and religion itself is simply not something that needs to be in the constitution. Sure, good morals are needed for every person, but you don't need religion for that. And that is another point that Lewis Black emphasises on.
>This country is becomming more and more skewed on the constitution in my opinion, and I'll tell you why.
It's actually historically been much worse than it is now. While there are still problems with constitutional violations, they happen with less frequency than in the past.
>The government needs to stay out of ALL religious based laws including but not limited to:
gay marriage, abortion, drug use, our pledge of allegiance, and many many others.
The Constitution allows for the Supreme Court to define what rights people have in these areas. If other parts of government violate that, then someone has to sue to make sure that the Constitution is enforced. Otherwise, they get away with it.
>Many people lives are destroyed by this calspe of our moral values. With respect and sensitivty, parents that have abandonded traditional rolls, were in most cases thaught traditional rolls from their parents. This younger generation for the most part don't have that positive moral support as a result they have No foundation.
Actually, most evidence shows that the younger generation is more spiritual and more morally bound that other recent generations, the pendulum is swinging back in the other direction. They aren't doing it exactly the way their parents did it, and that causes friction, but they are much less likely to engage in crime, smoking, drug use, etc. and much more likely to graduate, get good grades, volunteer in their community, etc.
Mrs. Q, when it comes to the term "spiritual" many people use this term losely. I'm refering to the fifth and sixth definition of the word, relating to not just a higher power yet to "godly morals." The younger generation has the ablity to obtain more kwoledge but they do not have moe wisdom. They are inventing new and more deadly drugs or ways of doing drugs everyday.
Lindsay Register, you have serveral issues that I will breifly address; First,
I would rather we stick to American government issues and leave uh, whatever else you're talking about out of the way. Actually religion has always played some role in the developement of America, as well as dealing with many issues we face in our current times. So as you see it is relevant!
Secondly;
I don't know you, Mr. Turner, I would rather not know you.
You come across very harsh, loathing, condescending and haughty! IF you must be this way, it is fine with me however instead of committing the logical fallacy: Ad Homien you might try to disprove my agruements. Based on my postings or my response to a post, it would be immature of you to say "you don't care to know me." But to each his or her own. Thirdly:
The point of the matter is this is a country that is no longer based soley on one religion.
That to is a fallacy; This country by no historical report was ever just built soley off of religion alone, it is proven other wise. Lastly:
Sure, good morals are needed for every person, but you don't need religion for that. And that is another point that Lewis Black emphasises on.
Where did you get your "good morals" from or for that matter where do you think Lewis Black got his from? What were the building blocks of you or your parents good morals? Perhaps it would be benifical to ask them so you can find out why you do or why you don't show these moral qualities. Thank you for your time on this matter.
>They are inventing new and more deadly drugs or ways of doing drugs everyday.
Actually, it is older generations who are inventing the new drugs. My generation (Generation X) is the one that uses the most drugs and your generation (Baby Boomer) that used the most drugs historically. Compared to our generations, kids today are lightweights when it comes to drug use.
Yes for the most part I remmeber schools talking to us about the danger of {lsd, pcp, acid, pot, herion} but now days I hear much more.
I believe religion to be a very private matter. I have my own religion like you guys have yours. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with the religion you call your own. I would never thump any religious books to try to make you change. In the world we live in today, you have to respect that we all have different opinions, perspectives and passions.
Morals come from many different places. Some not so conventional. Call me crazy, but I picked up alot of my own morals from living a fast, hard life. You don't have to be sober as a judge to know that you shouldn't kill, steal, cheat or lie. An open perspective, morals that I KNOW, and an appreciation for everyone alive on some level or another come from my own history.I learned that this is right for me but I'm seeing that some of you would use a person's learning period against them. I'm talking about some comments made about Obama's drug use and not wanting a cokehead for president. If we expect tolerance of the values that were taught to us or learned firsthand in life, we have to extend tolerance to people that we might not understand.
Stop exercising your asshole and your heart will grow.
well put josh jones, we learn every day but I assure you that you got a lot or your core values from some ones religous beliefs.
