Children of Man Immigration "Solution"

I saw Children of Man the other day, and it takes place in the future. One part that stood out to me was the way that futuristic Britain handled illegal immigration. Basically, they rounded them up, executed the sick/weak ones, and then send the rest to these "ghetto World War II" type places. It was very distressing.

What's more distressing is the fact that some radical conservatives desire this type of "solution" and are really pushing for it. Seeing this movie made me realize how horrible a "solution" that would be. Illegal immigrants may hurt our economy in some way, but that's no reason to cage them up/execute them.

What do you guys think about illegal immigration and/or this radical opinion of extinguishing it?

The evidence actually shows that illegal immigrants help the economy. They do use some of our social services and other taxpayer funds, but they pay all taxes except income and they generally work for low enough wages that they help businesses make large profts.

I too saw this movie and while I thought the movie was great, the images of immigrants was disturbing. I don't understand why people feel immigrants should be kicked out. They are the ones taking jobs we don't want, and working for next to nothing. We have to remember that we were all immigrants at one point coming to America for a better life. There is no way to stop all immigrants from coming in.

Working for dirt cheap and not taking away legal American's jobs may sound good on paper, but they also fill a lot of jobs that Americans, especially the young or lower-class, don't mind doing at all. According to supply and demand (treating lower class workers as a "product" for this example) the increasing unemployed labor force means decreasing wages, especially since illegal workers won't demand minimum wage, overtime pay, etcetera. Just because the American lower class are still employed doesn't mean illegal immigration doesn't hurt them. The argument of "creating more jobs" has always been a powerful one in politics, not just in times of high unemployment rates, because if the ratio of open positions to available workers is high, companies will have to compete with each other to get the work done, which eventually results in better pay and benefits. Some capitalist countries don't have a government mandated minimum wage at all, and yet still manage to have fair wages, largely due to this.

The problem with immigration is not with people who come here legaly. Legal immigrants are often hard-working, good Americans. The problem is the unprotected borders where illegals smuggle drugs and people across. The solution is to put up a fence along the border and be strict enforcing the border. Noone will be allowed to enter illegaly. We can't let thugs, drug smugglers and terrorists into our country and give them support through our legal system.
Also, businesses need to be held accountable for hiring illegals.
And really..come on..conservatives dont want to kill or send immigrants into concentration camps.

Oh thanks I forgot about that Ryan, *possibly* one of the ways liberals and conservatives could agree on a course of action: worry less about punishing the illegals who are already here and more about punishing the companies who hire them. Even large chains with reputations to uphold, like McDonald's, have no problem hiring illegals and even creating fake employees on the books so that the illegals can work double shifts on the clock and not get payed overtime. Certainly the government has the ability to discourage the company's part in this, even if they could never locate all the individual illegals themselves.
