Encouraged

Since I first learned anything about Barack Obama, I was totally against his presidency. I wasn't necessarily voting for McCain, I was simply voting against Obama. However, I must admit, for the first time, I was encouraged by what Obama had to say the other night in his address to Congress. I don't fully understand HOW he is planning on addressing the energy, health care and education issues that he mentioned, I am just simply encouraged that he is aware of the issues to the point of addressing them directly with Congress in front if the American people. I hope he is sincere in his efforts and isn't just blowing smoke for early approval of the American people.

I am the total opposite. Ever since the first time I heard Obama's name mentioned I was excited. At first I was torn between Obama and Hilary, both being a change for America. The more I heard about him and what he stood for he slowly begin winning my vote. He won the election by focusing on major issues and key points. Not by trying to slander his opponents name as others done to him. Like you others were probably against him before he even opened his mouth. When there is a will there is a way. America truly showed that a change has come . He is now our president. I too hope that he lives up to everything he has promised America.

If you don't understand how Obama is going to fix the economy, then why be excited? Obama is great at speaking and getting people to be on his side, but I assure you his big plans are nothing to be excited about unless you support socialism

I wasn't against Obama before he opened his mouth (I have nothing against the way the man looks), just the opposite. I strongly disagree with a few issues that Obama was vocal on during the campaign. Specifically the issue of abortion. I have never and will never vote for a man or a woman who supports abortion. Say what you will, but being in favor of women's rights regarding this issue is the same thing as being in favor of abortion. In my post, I was simply trying to say that I was encouraged by the fact that he appears to be trying to address, head on, some major issues that we are facing. Furthermore, as my president, I fully respect him and will support and pray for him and his staff just as I have previous presidents.

As I mentioned to Tamara, I was simply trying to say that I was encouraged by the fact that he appears to be trying to address, head on, some major issues that we are facing. I don't support socialism. I am simply TRYING to support my president, even though I don't agree with everything that he stands for.

It is frankly laughable that Obama is going to go down a slippery slope towards socialism. I am certainly not his greatest supporter, nor was I during the election, but I will support him now as my President. It seems you are listening more to the political pundits rather than doing a critical examination of the actual policy prescriptions. Nobody wants socialism, except possibly Bernie Sanders (I) of Vermont, but even then, not in the sense of Karl Marx. Not even in the sense of Canada, and certainly not to the extent of our Scandinavian friends across the Atlantic.

You have to realize that capitalism does not mean pure laissez-faire... Every major capitalistic economy on the globe is a mixed system of public/private.

As for the original post, I am also garnering good wishes towards him, but don't think he is going to get much turned around. It will be an accomplishment in itself if he can just put a stick in the gears of the economy to stop it from falling further.

With the newest bailouts the government is going to be able to pretty much control whoever they give money to. What is it called when the government owns all the major corporations? I believe that is socialism. Maybe not your definition of socialism, but it sure looks like it to me.

I hope the best for Barack Obama and the new administration becuase they are definately up for a huge challange in turning around everything about this country. I definately do not support the government owning a majority of a corporation and do believe that this is a definate form of socialism. However the prior administration pumped massive amounts of "our" money into a number of massive companies on the road to failing. This has to be done becuase some of the corporations are just, "to big to fail." I hope the best for the future of America and hope that we will emerge even stronger than when we went into this.
