Obama/Baucus Health Care Reform Politically Feasible?

The proposed healthcare reform policy constructed by President Obama and Senate Finance Committee Chairman, Max Baucus (D) of Montana, looks to be a politically feasible solution, unlike the Clinton administration's utter failure in 1993. But some extreme left-wing activists still are not happy. Instead of a British-style, single-payer system that these activists want, the Obama/Baucus plan emphasizes a public health care option, which is an easier pill for Conservatives to swallow. I think that liberals on all sides of the political spectrum should celebrate the administration's reform plan. According NY Times columnist Paul Krugman, the plan could "be to the new New Deal what social security was to the original" (Krugman, The Conscience of a Liberal, 243)

A brief outline of the plan:

1. Community Rating
2. Subsidies for low-income families
3. Mandated Coverage
4. Public-private competition

  1. I believe the Obama/Baucus plan is a good start in trying to reform health care. With everything that's going on in the US, Americans should not have to worry about how they are going to provide health care for their families. So anything that is going to lift one burden off of Americans mind is great!
