In New York City, thousands of schools are doing what is now called, "No Name-Calling Week," which gives educators a chance to speak out and lecture against homosexual discrimination and homophobia. Between Jan. 21 through 25, No Name-Calling Week is sponsored to help reach out to students in 5th through 8th grade, to teach respect and methods of eliminating harassment via child bullies.
Dr. Eliza Byard, spokesperson for the GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, said, "Unfortunately, far too many students experience the negative impact of name-calling, bullying and harassment. Through proactive educational interventions like No Name-Calling Week, schools can make a difference in the safety of all of their students."
Despite their efforts, last year only a small percentage of students claimed to feel safe at school. Over 60 percent of students reported that bullying still continued.
I think this article really says something about our progression as a country. We have the technology to fly to the moon and back, we have the means to make better fuel efficient cars that pollute less, and we understand that we are but a tiny speck in the universe, yet we still have homophobes? I'm glad to see that there are people who are determined enough to try and bring something as small as the sexual orientation of strangers/neighbors/family to a halt and maybe start zeroing in on real issues.

As Americans it must be our mission to destory our countries moral fiber by any means necessary. We must teach our childern to be proactive and not reactive.
ReplyDeleteIt would be better if you were more specific on which moral fibers we as Americans are destroying. If you think about it, 80 if not 50 years ago, the idea of a black man and a white woman marrying in America was taboo, a break of moral fiber, as some would say. So which fibers are delicate now?
ReplyDeleteWe are back to the born right of all Americans, freedom. If you believe you are gay, it makes you happy, and you lead a successful life, who is to say that its wrong. It doesnt mean i'm gay, or the next persons gay, just that there are people who are. It is a personal decision that I am tolerant of and respect. People who bully homosexuals are letting their fear mechanisms show, it is a sign of weakness. It is a sign of misunderstanding.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with homosexuals, they have the right to make their own decisions. What I do have a problem with is that a school would try to force people to think something. I think they should focus on the negative effects of bullying not on getting people to accept homosexuals. If a person thinks something is morally wrong why should the school try to change their mind. I think it's crazy that in the fifth grade they are already telling students what they should think. That's scary!
ReplyDeleteActually if you read through it correctly, you would have read that, "No Name-Calling Week is sponsored to help reach out to students in 5th through 8th grade, to teach respect and methods of eliminating harassment via child bullies."
